Peru: Sea turtle bycatch, Conservation, & Communities
Pro Delphinus is a fantastic marine conservation NGO in Peru, run by Joanna Alfaro-Shigueto and Jeff Mangel. They do rigorous scientific research coupled with active outreach and community involvement in a variety of projects. A recent news article on their work with the University of Exeter highlights their finding that the bycatch of sea turtles in Peru’s small-scale fisheries could number in the thousands. A recent video showcases their Darwin Sustainable Artisanal Fisheries Initiative. I was fortunate enough to do a summer internship with them in 2008, and much of what I study now is inspired by their work.
